Deep Fried Paula
Paula Deen built her empire on Southern cooking served with her down home hospitality. Parlaying a catering service into a multi-million dollar empire, the Butter Queen is a best-selling author and a Daytime Emmy award-winning host. Or is a former Daytime Emmy award-winning host.
In the words of Kanye West, “It was all good a week ago” for Deen until she had to take the stand in a lawsuit brought against her by a former employee. Being accused of running a business rife with racial and sexual harassment, Deen tried to defend herself and her behavior, not realizing soon enough she’d have even more defending and explaining to do. When asked if she ever used the “N-word,” Deen replied, “Yes, of course.” Perhaps acknowledging the pill she just dropped needed more water to swallow, Deen furthered explained she used the word after she was held at gunpoint by what turned out to be a former employee some years back.
That in and of itself shouldn’t be shocking to anyone that grew up in the South or knows just a tiny bit of this country’s checkered past with racial relations. An elderly Southern white lady called a Black person a “nigger.” By no means is the use of that word by Deen, her family or anyone that looks like Deen okay but it’s about as shocking as when Ellen DeGeneres announced to the world that she was gay. No! Really?!
Calling someone a “nigger” alone doesn’t make you a racist. It’s a good indication of how red your neck is but that alone isn’t why Paula Deen is in trouble. Wanting to create an event that goes back in time to the days of slavery by throwing a plantation wedding complete with elderly Black man dressed in white jackets and black bow ties as servers is a great indication that you’re a racist. Saying that your assistant who you love dearly is “as black as this board” while pointing to the black backdrop behind you is another great indication that we have a racist in our mist. Add them all together and we have Paula Deen serving up her cholesterol-clogging, widow-making fried chicken slathered in some Southern hospitality with a side of ignorance and racism.
After backing out of her appearance on the “Today Show,” which was scheduled before the red started to seep through Deen’s turtleneck, the 66-year-old went on the show earlier today. Because her previous attempts at apologizing were odd at best, Deen used the opportunity to plead her case to America. With crocodile tears and more lies and denials, Deen said she’s only used the “N-word” just that one time and she’s oh so sorry, even though in her deposition she’s admitted to saying “nigger” on several occasions. Begging for forgiveness from her butter loving fans or perhaps trying to appeal to the very demographic she offended, Deen said, “I is what I is.”
For anyone that is naïve enough to believe Deen wasn’t motivated to apologize because she’s bleeding money, her honesty and morals should come into question after Deen admitted she was diabetic THREE years after she was diagnosed all the while constantly shoveling her heart attack specials down America’s throat for money.
Take it or leave it, she was brought up in a time when calling a Black person a “nigger” to his face was just as acceptable as owning slaves was okay when her parents were around, right? It’s okay to be stuck in the times and your old, antiquated ways even if it’s no longer socially acceptable to call someone a “nigger” then serve them a meal that will no doubt lead to an early death, right?
Now that the outrage has started to last a few news cycles, companies are dropping Deen like the survival rate of a triple bypass surgery with each double cheeseburger with extra bacon and rightfully so. The Food Network must be thanking their lucky stars Deen’s contract just happened to be expiring at the right time and opted not to renew it. Smithfield decided they don’t want the Butter Queen hawking their wares. And perhaps the biggest blow was losing Walmart, the largest retailer in the country. Growing up in the South shouldn’t excuse you for holding on to the stereotypes and emotions of yester year any more than growing up in the hood should excuse you from holding down gainful employment.
But then again there are enough people in this country that are willing to give the Butter Queen a free pass. She be what she be…
